@deathbird: You seem to miss understand what Lan is saying, so I'll put it in a nutshell not including the stuff that he can cause because he's a necromancer via Lan's timeline:
birth to age 3 he thought himself the more worthless of himself and his sister Briggy do to his inaptitude at either his father's shape shifting and his mothers necromancy. Age 3 Father doesnt come home, his mother sees people at the door and tells the siblings to run and they did Briggy got scared and ran back to their now burning home leaving her defenseless brother behind in the cold she dies in the fire along with their mother. Shortly their after he is found by a vampiric follower of Isis named Walter whom kept him as a pet (term of affection for vampires) until he could no longer take care of the kit, and sent him to an orphanage (while stuck in human form), while there Lan's powers began to show and the orphanage located where magic wasn't well known gave him to the government whom also didn't understand magic or at least not born necromancy and shape-shifting together and decided to turn the approximately 5 year old child into a weapon designated Deathsong. Walter learned of this and broke Lan out after this however Lan changed hands several times as a weapon almost always killing his "masters" at the time he didn't know the pain he was causing nor did he understand that there are more ways to please people, Walter eventually learned who Lan is and whom might accept him, his late family's greatest friends the Fiveclaws leading to a fateful train ride the ended in the meeting of two mischievous brothers for the first time and Lan's adoption (approx age 8 at the time). years later after being drugged by his evil little sister Summer he met his first wife Dido and stuff happened (I'm NOT gonna go over 200 pages worth of events that led to it) where he saw the reality of what happens to his people for the first time (he barfed) and liberated a wagon full of does (some pregnant) and their kits and a horse, 8 of said does he married then because of them and Summer he met Elvina (again not going over it) now from the beginning he ages as slow as his mother did however that lifespan is not shared with his kits however do to necromancer clan that despises all (other) descendants of Zeus or Hades and because Lan is the named heir of the current Hades (a curse in its self) one of whom used his reanimated cousin Sha-ti to capture and sell off half his children to half of whom are either still lost or murdered, forcing Lan to go on an s triple r mission in Omaha Search and Rescue and/or Recovery and Revenge

I did miss the first half but I have been reading long enough to remember the rest. Yes there are worse things. I am also an orphan. My adoptive family was nice but expected me to be something I never could. I was never aggressive enough, never liked sports or any confrontations and was plagued by depression. Suicide was no help, (didn't die) and I have never found my place in the world or where I came from or why I was given away. There are worse things. Lan found his past and his special abilities. He's a lucky guy.

@deathbird: Considering both Spencer and James Hades and Boo & Summer, all enjoy meddling with the timeline i don't think luck has much to do with Lan.

@mhalpern: a very long strange trip to get to this place in the story :)

@rmccool - Indeed I'm afraid I had to skip a ton that timeline took me almost an hour off of memory mostly so yeah there's a good amount more that strictly pertains to Lan, I just included he parts that alone could seem worse than death there were alot of good parts to like how Lan handed a string to Sky and she handed it to Summer and Summer pulled it on Warmwind who ended up with wet fur... Or Montigo Vision...

To be perfectly honest, I wasn't aware/can't remember of some of that, even though I did read it all. The bit's I don't recognise are pretty much just the "orphanage" and the "government tried to turn him into a weapon" bits, though.

Catching up (or trying to) @deathbird: Thank you for the summary.

The last time I followed public humiliation was just about the point where Warmwind's wing was wrecked. I haven't been following any webcomics since then (I had heard that duck was dead and gone, for good; while it is back, at a new name, none of my bookmarked URL's work and the site is too slow to be usable).

The one thing that I thought was missing from that summary: Wasn't Summer's big "crime" the idea of thinking that a pooka was just a source of money, that they could be sold, and just have more of them bred? No real regard for them as intelligent beings.
